In The Sword of the Dawn, Dorian Hawkmoon, Champion of the Runestaff, continues his struggle against the tyrannical Dark Empire of Granbretan. Fresh from earlier adventures, Hawkmoon and his companion Huillam d’Averc go in search of a way to liberate the continent from the Empire’s domination.
Hawkmoon’s quest leads him to the strange magical realm of the Whirling City, a place that drifts between dimensions. There he encounters the enigmatic Warriors of the Dawn, supernatural beings who may hold the key to defeating Granbretan. However, they will only aid him if he proves his worth.
Central to the story is Hawkmoon’s attempt to recover the fabled Sword of the Dawn, a weapon infused with sorcerous power and bound to the mystical forces opposing the Dark Empire. Its retrieval sends Hawkmoon through perilous landscapes, traps, alternate worlds, and battles with bizarre creatures—classic Moorcockian mixtures of science-fantasy, weird technology, and baroque villainy.
As Hawkmoon gains the Sword and earns the allegiance of the Warriors of the Dawn, he returns to the struggle against Granbretan with newfound strength. The book closes with him poised for the larger confrontations that shape the series’ finale, while the mysterious Runestaff continues to direct his fate from the shadows.
