The Final Programme introduces Jerry Cornelius—scientist, adventurer, pop-culture dandy, and Moorcock’s iconic “eternal champion” refracted through 1960s counterculture. The novel blends psychedelic science fiction, satire, and postmodern absurdity.

Jerry returns to England to confront his unstable, dangerous brother Frank Cornelius, who has seized the family estate and holds hostage both their mother and Catherine, Jerry’s former lover and Frank’s wife. Jerry’s mission to rescue them quickly becomes entangled with a secret scientific project run by the enigmatic physicist Miss Brunner, a brilliant but amoral woman whose appetites—intellectual, sexual, and destructive—drive much of the plot.

Miss Brunner recruits Jerry to help her complete the Final Programme, an experiment designed to create a superior, post-human being. Jerry agrees, partly out of curiosity, partly because their objectives briefly align. Together they travel through a world on the edge of social and political collapse, dealing with mercenaries, revolutionaries, and oddball technocrats.

As Frank becomes increasingly unstable and Miss Brunner grows more obsessed with the ultimate experiment, Jerry moves through a landscape equal parts spy thriller, surrealist comic strip, and philosophical puzzle. The story culminates in the activation of the Final Programme, which fuses Jerry and Miss Brunner into a single, androgynous, godlike entity—the Cornelius Machine. This new being represents an evolutionary leap, detached from humanity’s conflicts, ambiguities, and moral constraints.

The ending is both triumphant and unsettling, emblematic of Moorcock’s interest in unstable identities, cultural decay, and the creation of new mythic figures from the ruins of the old.
