The Knight of the Swords
Giclée Print Collectors Edition
‘I am Duke Arioch, your master. I am the Lord of Hell, a Noble of the Realm of Chaos, the Knight of the Swords. I am your enemy.’
The Knight of the Swords by Michael Moorcock, published in 1971, is the first book in the two-trilogy saga of Corum Jhaelen Irsei, one of the many avatars of the Eternal Champion. The doomed hero, one of the last surviving members of a decadent race, moves through the different planes of existence seeking to battle the forces of Chaos and restore cosmic balance to the Multiverse. The Knight of the Swords refers to Duke Arioch, a prince of hell, who sometimes aids the Eternal Champion, but always at a terrible price.
Bob Haberfield’s stunning cover for the Mayflower edition perfectly encapsulates the baroque, surrealistic atmosphere of the novel.
“It wasn’t until after Bobs death when I went to clear out his house, that I discovered at the bottom of a cupboard a big stack of paintings on artist board. They were what remained of Bob’s collection of illustrations he did in the seventies and had been sitting in the dark for almost 50 years. I was amazed at the vibrancy of the paintings, that looked as fresh and relevant as the day they were painted. I had seen some of them as book covers, but to see the originals at full size was spellbinding! It’s with great pleasure that I am able to revive these artworks and bring them out into the light of day once more. I’m sure you will be as captivated as I am by them.” – Ben Haberfield
